One Day National Conference on

“Corporate Social Responsibility in India- Changes and Challenges”

Global socio-economic environment has undergone significant changes during the last two decades. Recent global financial debacle (2008) has raised many issues for sustainability and equitable justice all around the world. It is in this context that planners, policy makers, technocrats and social activists have expressed serious concern over balancing the growth with justice. It is gradually realized that big corporate houses operating from the different countries of the world have consolidated greater wealth of the society keeping a large group of society far away from attaining viable standard of living. Therefore, considerable amount of debate is going on regarding role of corporate houses towards social justice. Though Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is a pretty old phenomenon, redefined versions of CSR have evolved over the period of time across the society. There is a strong group of classical thinkers advocating more for economic rational in business. It is largely claimed that function of every business is ultimately to stay in business. This thereby insist more on financial viability and asset capacity of the corporate houses to render best services to the society. However, since the last quarter of 28th century loud debate is going on with regard to the conventional term of business. Social thinkers and academicians have devoted much of their efficiency towards redesigning the concept of business houses. This virtually led to induction of three “V’s” popularly known as Value, Viability and Visibility.Conventionally social welfare from the business perspective is having its root in Indian history of business but with the changing economic dimensions development in principle and practice has undergone significant changes. It is in this context that Indian business environment is now not an exception to the phenomenon of CSR that prevails across the world. In Indian economy, Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA-2009) has provided some necessary guideline along with technical structure. There after the enactment of Section 135 of the Companies Act-2013 made CSR for Indian corporate as mandatory exercise.Corporate houses, academicians, social scientists and activists are found largely divide in respect of perception of CSR in India. There is loud thinking made in respect of the scope of CSR. Unlike the traditional one current approach refers to economic welfare, social balance and environmental norms to be achieved all throughout the operations by corporate houses. Currentlegislative frame work, relevance of the concept, practices followed by corporates and changing perceptions of people at large add to complexity and ambiguity in performing CSR. On one hand we find considerable difference in between different countries for CSR, on the other hand legal frame work is also found having some anomalies and leakages within itself.Considering the entire conceptual background of CSR and practices followed, there is plenty of scope for meaningful discussion and research elements in performance of CSR. Having recognized the thematically approach of the government and social concern it is of utmost significance to have creative intensive research oriented academic exercise over the rational of CSR in India.Post Graduate Department of Social work in this context is pleased to provide a platform to young academic scholars and practioners to have meaningful discussion with a concrete suggestive policy conclusion.
